Our Story
I grew up in a railroad family and have spent more than two decades working in the industry myself. Railroading shaped the way I look at work: pay attention to the details, respect the conditions around you and make sure the job is done properly.
I have also always been drawn to the history of the Great Northern Railway and the people who built and operated railroads across some of the most demanding country in the American West.
That combination of railroad heritage, hard work and mountain life eventually became the foundation for Great Northern Tallow.
The name was inspired by the Great Northern Railway—one of America’s great northern transcontinental railroads. Its lines crossed Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington, carrying people and freight through mountain ranges, severe winters and vast stretches of Western country.
In 1931, the railroad extended south to Bieber, California, where it connected with the Western Pacific and helped create the Inside Gateway between the Pacific Northwest and California.
That history carries qualities I wanted this company to represent: endurance, practical workmanship, Western independence and the determination to keep moving through difficult country.
Great Northern Tallow did not begin in a product-development meeting. It began at home.
As I moved toward simpler foods and more traditional practices, I began breaking down primal cuts of beef and lamb myself. That process produced more rendered tallow than I could use in the kitchen, and I became interested in the many practical ways people had used it for generations.
I started experimenting with small batches of balm and soap for friends and family. The formulas were straightforward, useful and well received. More people began asking for them, the recipes continued to improve, and what began as a personal project gradually became Great Northern Tallow.
The PRODUCT THAT STARTED IT ALL
One of the earliest Great Northern products, this small-batch soap helped turn a home experiment into a growing line of traditional tallow goods.
Its crisp peppermint and rosemary scent and straightforward tallow-based formula still reflect what Great Northern is meant to be: practical, distinctive and made with care.
WHAT GOES INTO GREAT NORTHERN
We build our products around ingredients selected for a clear purpose. Our formulas vary by product, but the Great Northern approach remains the same: keep the ingredient list understandable, make each batch carefully and avoid unnecessary additions.
Grass-Fed Beef Tallow
The foundation of our balms and many of our other products. Tallow creates a rich, concentrated texture that softens dry-feeling skin and helps reduce moisture loss.
California Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Added to selected formulas to help create a smooth, spreadable balm and connect the product to California agriculture.
Beeswax
Used in selected products to provide structure, create a protective feel and help the product remain useful in changing conditions.
Essential Oils
Carefully selected blends give each scented product its individual character, from crisp peppermint and eucalyptus to lavender, citrus, frankincense and cedarwood.
TESTED BEYOND THE WORKSHOP
A formula is not finished simply because it looks good in a container.
Great Northern products have been placed in the hands of railroaders, mechanics, loggers, construction workers, restaurant workers, skiers, snowboarders and other people whose work and outdoor lives expose their skin to frequent washing, changing weather and demanding conditions.
Their feedback helps identify what needs to be adjusted before a product becomes part of the permanent Great Northern line.

Great Northern Tallow is handcrafted in Northern California near the Sierra Nevada—country shaped by mountains, snow, dry summers, working communities and generations of Western industry.
This is not simply where the company is located. The environment influences what we make, how the products are tested and the practical character we expect them to have.
A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER
I did not start Great Northern Tallow to make products that merely sounded natural or looked good on a shelf. I started it because I had useful material, an interest in traditional practices and the desire to make something people could genuinely put to work.
Every batch still carries that original purpose. Make it carefully. Listen when people use it. Improve it when necessary. Never lose sight of the people it was made for.
